Sucking Habit
Sucking is a natural reflex. It makes the child feel secure and happy . When this sucking period extends to the time of eruption of permanent teeth it may cause serious dental problems. In addition to the length of time a child sucks, the force when sucking can cause a problem. Lightly laying the thumb or pacifier in the mouth is a lot different than vigorously sucking away.
If talking you your child doesn’t help stop the habit a band aid on the thumb or glove on the hand may remind the child not to suck. IF this doesn’t work speak to your pediatric dentist, an appliance may be necessary.
